Darren Emerson – CEO & Co-Founder

Darren Emerson is an award-winning immersive artist, director, writer, and producer who pushes the boundaries of storytelling through virtual reality, interactive installations, and cinematic innovation. As CEO and Co-Founder of East City Films, he drives the company’s creative vision and strategic direction, blending artistry with technology to craft transformative experiences. His work fuses cinema, theatre, music, and interaction to explore themes of community, history, and human connection.

Darren entered the immersive space in 2015 with Witness 360: 7/7, his debut VR experience, which premiered in competition at IDFA DocLab. He followed this with Indefinite (2016), a powerful VR documentary commissioned by Sheffield Doc/Fest, later featured in a New York Times Op-Ed.

In 2018, his groundbreaking room-scale documentary Common Ground was commissioned by Creative XR and went on to win multiple awards, including Best Immersive Storytelling at Sandbox Immersive Festival, the Grand Prix Innovation at Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Best VR Experience at the Broadcast Awards, and Best VR Narrative at the World Press Photo Awards.

Darren’s 2022 work, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats, launched with a six-week sold-out exhibition at Coventry City of Culture, winning the Immersive Non-Fiction award at IDFA DocLab and Best Location-Based Entertainment at the VR Awards 2023. The experience continues to tour internationally to critical acclaim.

In 2023, he served as Creative Director for three VR projects commissioned by the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, directing Letters from Drancy, which had its world premiere at the Venice Biennale.

As CEO of East City Films, Darren remains a pioneering force in immersive storytelling, dedicated to creating bold, thought-provoking experiences that captivate audiences worldwide.
