The Challenge
To create a series of films about the craft of the artisans that sell on Not On The High Street.
Not On The High Street
It was important to Not On The High Street that these films weren't just the run of the mill profile documentaries. With the busy Christmas period coming up they wanted to make sure the techniques of the creators shone through. From map creator Wandermap to goldsmith Cari-Jane Hakes, they wanted to appeal to an audience eager to start their Christmas shopping but looking for something different.
The Solution
Director Tom Palliser brought great visual flair to the films. Bringing out the skill and attention to detail that goes into each piece the artisans make, Tom was also keen to share the unique stories behind their creative ventures. The films start with the raw materials and end on the finished items. In between, they cover the making process through close and macro shots. We were lucky enough to profile the aforementioned Wandermap and Cari-Jane, as well as coffee liqueur Cold & Blac, edible gift makers Kensington Lane and globe makers Lander & May. From North Yorkshire to the Isle of Wight the films showcase some of the most talented creators in the country.
The Result
We realised five beautiful films which take pride of place on the Guardian website. Each film is totally different, capturing the unique work and personality of each artisan.
